Those poor kids. I hope the other two are found without further violence, & given to family with support from Oranga Tamariki, rather than going into O.T. care.
Its likely to take them a long time to get over this, & it will almost certainly stay with them for life.

i was reading about this on daily mail... they make mention of a newborn potentially being with the other two kids. first i have heard about a newborn in all this. all unconfirmed.

The last 4 years spent with their Dad in that situation will have gained them some pretty strong independence and survivalist skills. Mum has her work cut out resocialising and taming them I would suspect. Preppers in the making.
Confidentiality restrictions will prevent most of their story over the past years, at least until they're legally old enough to speak for themselves publicly, so expect a lot of speculation and conspiracy to fill that void in the interim.

The mother has presented well (or been presented well) in recent media reports, however there were very good reasons Tom had sole custody at the time he first "went bush" so I very much hope, for the sake of the children, that they don't end up back with her.
The natural assumption of many was that the reason he disappeared with the kids in the first place was that he was preventing the mother taking the kids off him, however that wasn't the case at all. He had sole custody and there was no suggestion of that changing anytime soon.
With him now dead, we'll never know why he did what he did but hopefully they're able to find the two missing kids in time and none of the three are too permanently damaged by the whole thing (no way it won't affect them each in some way for the rest of their lives though).

I hope the cop pulls through and makes a full recovery, he is lucky to survive a gunshot to the head.
Im guessing the kids are the best chance of getting any information on the whole situation. It could have ended up much worse if Tom was alone with no child to provide directions to his camp, not that it was something the child should have witnessed.
Its a sad situation but I think it was half expected with the direction things were going.

At every mention of Tom's accumulated firearms cache and that he must have had assistance from locals my thoughts are of how simple it would be to use those firearms to ascertain their previous owners if only serial numbers were recorded against firearms licence holders.

They were stolen, and possibly a paper trail of it being reported stolen. Not everyone is stupid, and it would be pretty easy to set up drop off points for supplies. The amount of bullshit turning up online about this is out of control, stuff being made up and presented as news.
