Yes, Labour did what was necessary at the time and had already put the brakes on the spending toward the end of their term once the worst of covid was over.

National however reacted completely contradictory to normal economic theory by cutting costs to the bone.  Normally governments will spend up in a recession to prop up the economy, that's when NZ has historically had big infrastructure projects completed, but national chose to make things worse by laying off 1000s of staff and slashing spending, making the recession that much worse...
This world would be a perfect place if it wasn't for the people.
